Any Republican who tries to hide behind “states rights” should be reminded that the Confederacy argued that states had the “right” to own humans as property. They not only went to war over that “right,” they enshrined it in their constitution and made clear that no state had the “right” to abolish it.

The Confederacy also had no problem with a Federal Government that sided with slave owners in regards to states which passed “fugitive slave” laws.

So much for States rights.
