The UK had lost almost an entire generation just twenty years earlier. The US was still feeling the effects of the Depression and had no appetite whatsoever for war. Chamberlain had no stick to brandish so he did the best that he could. Today’s conservatives can only embrace the binary choices endorsed by their leaders. Chamberlain can’t have been a good guy because Hitler and he was therefore a bad guy and the worstest person evar.

He really was between a rock and a hard place. I used to hate him as a Czechoslovak-American but learning more about WWI makes me understand the mood better. So many forget that until Pearl Harbor, many in our own country were adamantly opposed to going to war with the Axis.
