The Apple device is supposed to be not only touch but gesture driven, maybe even proximity driven (i.e., you don’t have to actually touch the screen - the patent was officially awarded yesterday by the patent office to Apple.) It will be meant to be used without the standard typewriter layout (qwertyuiop for short).

Oh, it will probably have a software keyboard as an option, should you have an application that really needs it, but that will not be the main design goal of the applications.

I know all about that sort of system. Sprint sells the Palm PRe, which uses gestures quite extensively. As for me, I prefer non-touchscreen devices. I’m somewhat old-fashioned and prefer a keyboard.
