Something to consider is that currently, nobody comments in links. The comments thread here is the community hub, as it were, and the community is what I suspect keeps many so addicted to this place. If some diaries, for want of a better term, start to become spinoff comment threads of their own, the community may seem more fragmented. It may grow, or it may seem disjoint and impersonal to some who like the centralised chatroom feel.

What I think has happened in the past on occasion is people have used their spinoff for a conversation thread on a particular topic, whereas here the main topic disappears after awhile. In that way, this could be a good thing, as more controversial topics may get pushed to a spin-off thread, and off the main thread where it’s aggravating everybody except the 3 or 4 or 5 people involved.
