I don’t think Trump et al. are taking this time to think of a way to dig out of this hole. Instead, I think they are considering how to most effectively double down.

Stop digging is simply not an option, because that will lead to Trump losing the GOP nomination.

If they wanted him to double down he wouldn’t be skipping out on the Heritage Action Forum at the last minute. He’d just go and be his usual unmitigated asshole self. His campaign is desperately buying time in an attempt to sort this shit out.
