Yes, the Fujian pipes, in particular. Silver, with a sort of churchwarden stem, about two feet long in total, very slim, a bowl just large enough for maybe three good pinches of tobacco. Very elegant, those.

The Lady’s pipes from turkey are made out of meerchaum, and are carved in some of the most delicate and fantastic patterns you can imagine. A common motif is of a hand holding a rosebud, which is the bowl of the pipe. Usually these have silver fittings, too, and I’ve seen one that even had a little chain so the user could wear it around her neck when not in use, as a sort of decorative element.

Sorry to butt in, but you note turkey (Turkey?). I’m heading to Istanbul next month, and this looks interesting. Or am I completely off base?
