I read an article recently that stated that SC has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in the U.S. but rarely is anything done about it. The article noted that males killing females is very common in the state. One would think that with SC being a major location of the “c”hristian Taliban, one wouldn’t find such rampant domestic abuse/violence, but since I grew up in the South, I know that what many say in public does not match their private behavior. Sarah Palin’s Alaska is #1 in males killing their domestic partners in the U.S.

That was the topic for the main discussion at our recent issues conference (Democratic Party.) It was a real eye-opener. Some of the most egregious facts are that, in many cases, offenders can pay a fine instead of going to any kind of treatment or intervention. There are some great people down here trying to change things, but it’s very sad.

The one factoid that stood out to me was:
All 46 counties have at least one animal shelter to care for stray dogs and cats, but the state has only 18 domestic violence shelters to help women trying to escape abuse in the home.

The article you linked is just a brief look—the Post and Courier did an incredible series on it last year—really well done, but, I’ll warn you—pretty depressing.
