Mine never did. Gyrocompass was bad for two years before I reported aboard ship, and two years later, when I left, it was still bad (and still on back-order). I once spent 36 hours babysitting it through sea trials (and passing, astnishingly). I joined the Navy to get away from grease and dirt and cold (heavy equipment operator in Colorado); six years later, every pair of dungarees I had was stained with graphite grease and hydraulic fluid.
