If these news sites are afraid they’re loosing business to bloggers and decide they’re going to charge for their articles, they better clean up their comments. I rarely go to Yahoo because of it and I would certainly never pay for access. Not to any of them.

What they need to do is just move all commenting to a Blog Forum. If you want to discuss the article, you click and you’re taken off the page onto another server and you can bitch all you want somewhere else.
