The French can be very Catholic and very anti-clerical. Its a hangover from the Revolution.

It depends on the region of France. The Vendee, for example, is still very Catholic. It’s actually one of the few places in the 1st World that has a growing order of Nuns. I don’t remember the name but if memory serves they’re a teaching order that provides many of the instructors for the area’s Catholic schools.
