I found UK trains quiet, clean and not as roomy as that picture. AC not needed. I’d be happy to settle for them.

By European standards, they’re a mess, especially the commuter ones. I take the train to work in western Europe and pay around 600 euros a year for a pass; in England, some people are talking about 5000 pounds a year. Plus long, frequent strikes and major scheduling fuckups that leave the commuters standing on the pier. It’s a major political issue, and you can thank Thatcher the Milk Snatcher for that one.
