They liked a pontiff who thought the Church’s wealth was a sign of its success and used said wealth to keep a lid on the “indiscretions” of the clergy.

They also liked pontiffs who focused more on denying gays rights and women the right to choose. The reaction to Francis by the right really reminds me of a favorite quote. “When I fed the poor, they called me a saint. When I asked why are they poor, they called me a communist.” Francis is getting shit from the nutcases because he has the nerve to question their economic policies that screw the poor. And what’s more the guy actually lives a pretty humble life himself. No wonder they hate him.
