Open primaries seem self-contradictory to me. Why have political parties if there are not going to be ways for parties to select their own candidates where the parties can define themselves?

Or, you can do as we now do in California, with the top-2 systems, which I also think is a bit silly (and ultimately is based on the overly-constraining idea that there are only two sides to a disagreement.)
