Hmmm. In Japan, there is ハンバーガー (hanbaagaa/hamburger) and then there is ハンバーグステーキ (hanbaagusuteki/hamburger steak). I have been told that the latter is a German food that was brought into Japan after Japan opened to the West. You can find it all over the place. You have to be careful about pronouncing it, because hanbaagaa is not the same as hanbaagu.

when I go to a Japanese restaurant staffed by Japanese people who maybe don’t speak English, I like a menu with pictures. I point to what I want, they get my order right, and everybody’s happy.
