Wikipedia claims that the pineapple pizza dates back to 1962, however in Gidget Goes Hawaiian, released in 1961, the mothers ask a waiter in Honolulu where they can get a good pineapple pizza, and are told, “San Francisco”.

I suspect that the ‘enlightened’ and ‘urban’ mix going on here is, in fact, a reflection of the interest in things Hawaiian that accompanied the state’s acceptance into the Union, combined with the unholy interest in doing diabolical things with canned good that characterized the late fifties and early sixties.
