No, I think it’s something in the personality. I’ve seen the same thing many times with religion. Some of the strictest, most dogmatic and inflexible Muslims I’ve known have been converts who were previously just as extreme in the opposite direction.

One day a guy’s gang banger, a crazy drugged-out musician, a hard-drinking womanizer, etc. then you turn around and suddenly he’s converted and become a scowling bearded holier-than-thou salafi who’s critical of everyone, refuses to make even the briefest eye contact with women, and demands that his wife wear not just hijab, but also niqab, etc.

It’s… weird. It’s like they’re incapable of doing anything in moderation.

Yes, its as if their previous life is completely wiped out…no compassion, no compromise, no understanding or nuance allowed.
