The reason people are encouraged to wear facemasks is because it helps reduce the transmission rates during the presymptomatic period (or asymptomatic period if one doesn’t ever develop symptoms). Is a cloth mask as effective as an N95 mask? No. But we need the N95 masks for medical folks right now and a cloth mask is more effective than not doing anything at all.
