Everything Hobbes observed in human nature during the English Civil War has been seen again, and again and again.

Hobbes theory is not “People are shitty when shit hits the fan”. It is that in the state of nature, man is in a constant state of war. His theory is not that when social controls fail, chaos comes, but that chaos is the natural state.

I can think of nobody who would want to set up a controlled experiment on large scale chaos and death, but the very word phrase Hobbesian state of nature came about simply because we have seen what happens when you remove government control from a society.

But Hobbes’ theory isn’t about what happens when you remove government control from a society that already had them. It’s just not.

It doesn’t turn into a glibitarian paradise.

It turns into Somalia.

That’s great. Hobbes’ theory is not that if you remove social controls from an existing society there will be chaos. That would be ‘common sense’. Hobbes theory has to do with the natural state of man, the pre-state existence of man.
