Funny, because until 2009, players did not even come out until after the National Anthem. But then the US military started paying the NFL to promote for “patriotism” in games, probably inspired by the sight of soccer players singing their national anthems before matches.

I can see a possible solution for the NFL: Go back to the old system.

That said, it’s probably like trying to not wear a flag pin as a politician now. Once Reagan started that, any politician not wearing one was seen as unpatriotic by wingnuts.

I was once asked in a village board meeting why I didn’t wear one, my answer was “I don’t wear my patriotism on my lapel.”
