I remain convinced that Cheney’s motivation is competition for the same political-ecological niche. Generic establishment Republicans fully expect to be ruling in a GOP quasi dictatorship 20-30 years from now, and think that Trump is too early and blatant with this shit.

Plus if Trump succeeds, then the establishment Republicans will be permanently out of luck. No way would fellow authoritarians miss the authoritarian tendencies of GOP establishment types.
