Photographer Ernest Withers doubled as FBI informant to spy on civil rights movement

Wow! In retrospect he was probably trying to walk a fine line between supporting the movement he recorded and keeping “radicals” from taking over. Of course I cannot know what was going on in his head at the time. Those were wierd times to begin with and J. Edgar Hoover wasn’t helping.

I suppose someone asked to monitor the activities of the Tea Partiers (or any other political movement) for the FBI today would be in a similar situation. Lots of “not much to report” punctuated by a few radical wannabees.

Today most of the FBI/GBI operatives I knew/know are mostly interested in keeping drugs off the street and kids safe from exploitation.
