There is an unspoken rule among French farmers in the area. Don’t dig too deep when planting. They are referring to finding human remains.

Even so, bones still turn up. Those whose nationality can be ID’d (or are in a location where the great majority were from one nation) are buried in that nation’s war cemeteries. Back in 2008, the remains of 10 British soldiers were found in one place. Some of them still had intact ID tags, thus allowing their descendants an individual grave to visit.
