That’s terrible. This pastor obviously never read the Gospel, then, where the Pharisees ask Jesus the same question about the man born blind, “whose sin was responsible for this, his or his fathers?”

Unfortunately, it’s far too common in fundamentalist groups that kind of unforgiving reading of scripture. The flip side of it is the “prosperity gospel” if you are “right” with God everything will be wonderful, you’ll be rich and happy.
