Well, a huge variety of German AFV tank destroyers were used as tanks because they were much cheaper to build, but had difficulty in performing all the tasks that a tank needed to perform…which is why tank destroyers were kinda considered to be in their own niche.

Tank destroyer is a role, not a design type. Cheaper vehicles have tended to be used in the role (panzerjagera, M10, Archer) but the US Army realized that the only effective tax destroyer was a tank and gave the role back to Armor after WWII and deleting TD as a branch.
