re: #849 Sergey Romanov

What I found a bit weird is that in English foreign names are never modified to conform to Eng. pronunciation if they’re in Latin script. I mean, even if they’re Vietnamese etc. In Russian or other languages we usually trascribe the words phonetically, that saves the trouble. But in English how does one pronounce e.g. Mladic - Mladich (as it should be pronounced), or Mladik? Would one pronounce Mattogno as is, or as it should be (Mattonyo)? Etc., etc.

Since the spelling of ENGLISH words in English often leaves you guessing, we just leave foreign words and names as an exercise to the speaker—and an opportunity to make fun of them if they get it wrong.
