You do realize what made that performance so damn funny was that Kubrick played a joke on Pickens. He had Pickens play the role straight, having convinced the actor he was making a serious drama about WWIII. BTW, Peter Sellers was to have played the role of Major Kong, too, but could not deliver a genuine enough Texas accent.
