I don’t think it’s that. I think it’s more like people of European ancestry have had less of a chance of developing any kind of resistance to it than people of African ancestry. Sort of like how Native Americans had a much worse reaction to the smallpox virus, once it had been introduced by Europeans, than the Europeans themselves did.

And, actually, it was influenza and the common cold that decimated the Native Americans first.
