Until the 1930’s, Germany’s UFA Studios and Hollywood were near equals on the world market for popular filmmaking, but after all the ((creative people)) fled to Hollywood, there was no longer any competition.

Yeah, the pre-Nazi German film industry was a force to be reckoned with.

The bittersweet part of watching that 1927 film is the scenes of kids on their way to school. In 12 more years, they’d definitely be draft-age - and you really have to wonder how many of them survived the war. Or how many of the civilians featured in the film survived.

A world gone forever, and in less than two decades from when that film was released.
