So a student couldn’t, in theory, spend the night with a sibling or relative of the opposite gender without getting fined. WTF.

Unless Liberty has motels on campus, how is this any of their business? They’re regulating a student’s behavior off campus. WTF.

That’s covered by a Student Code of Conduct. By being a student you are de facto representing the universtiy to some degree. So they do have an interest in your activities, even off campus, since those activities reflect on them. (e.g. Students riot or protest off-campus about something - that does affect the university itself due to association.)

And as a private school Liberty University has a great deal of leeway in setting the rules. The attending student has essentially (and probably literally) signed a contract with the school regarding expected behaviors. And Liberty probably makes sure that these are expected to apply off campus as well.

Don’t like it, don’t go there.

A lot (most?) universities have such a Student Code of Conduct. Though I doubt that they are anywhere near this restrictive in most cases.
