republicans became the party of the business establishment immediately after the civil war, although there were traces of progressive elements in it still in the 30s, and moderate-to-liberals like rockefeller until the 70s
the populist and progressive movements did not become allied with the democratic party until the election of 1892. the racist allied dixiecrats remained the other part of the democratic party until the 70s
it was the combination of lbj’s civil rights act and the coming of ronald reagan that separated out the dixiecrats into the republican party and made non-conservative republicans extinct
