They key difference is when the unions protest it’s their decision. In this case the OWS crowd is deciding to shut down the port against the will of the workers. When unions protest they often cover expenses for striking workers, when someone else shuts down the port unions don’t pay. The workers get screwed.

Truckers, to name one group, would have lost pay as a result of a longshoreman strike in which they were not involved.
