re: #863 Walter L. Newton

One of our cats is a mouser, and he loves to bring the mice (and other critters) into the house and play with them, before tearing them apart any leaving body parts around the house, like he’s trying to show us how good he is.

Haku is a ratter. He doesn’t waste any time on show, but once or twice I’ve witnessed the kill. Takes five seconds, without a wasted movement.

He’s almost seven years old and still faster than any rat. If I could get a pelt premium from the city, I could afford to pay my water bill.

The Jindo was bred in Korea to hunt big game in packs. Deer, especially, but they’ll do bears, too. Traditional Korean hunting involves no guns; it’s the dog and the master against the game.

Once the quarry is laid, the pack guards it until one dog comes back and finds the master and leads him to the kill.

Haku, as you know, is the gentlest, most friendly dog in the world. So far no one has ever threatened me in his presence. I don’t want to borrow trouble, but I’d kinda like to see what he would turn into if someone ever did.
