I htink it was sci fi author H. Beam Piper (Little Fuzzy, Space Viking, Federation, Lord Calvin of Otherwhen) who had the idea of carniculture…growing meat without the animal, per se.

There has actually been some work in that direction.

Actually, K.W. Jeter had a couple of books featuring that as a main plot device; there was a giant glob of brainless chicken protein being grown in a vat. Called “Chicken Little,” every day the workers would just carve off slices of it and pack them.

Not sure if I would prefer that to the absolute atrocity that is factory farming or not.
