If Obama thinks that, he can start calling the movers now. That is perhaps the worst strategy to take with the average American voter.

Indeed, there was a lot of criticism last night directed towards “liberal despair,” griping about how quick liberals are to engaging in hysterics when things go awry. But it’s hard not to get depressed over a bad performance when you have the media trumpeting the next day about how well Romney did, how the immediate reaction polls show that people liked him, and all the hand-wringing over how poorly Obama did.

When you have a fairly low opinion of the American electorate, it’s hard not to see them coming away from Romney’s performance last night with at least a few doubts about Obama’s ability to handle the presidency for another 4 years. Romney didn’t need to convert anybody, he just needed to give them the impression that Obama’s a well-meaning guy who’s “in over his head.” Mission accomplished.
