There’s a minuscule chance that some of these idiots are are actually mystified at the complexities of American history, and why some people can make a joke about oppression to try to ease its pain while other people who never had the experience should tread lightly, but I think they know the truth quite well and are just nasty blowhards.

I did have someone in my class on race and gender in psychotherapy comment in response to reading the chapter about African American families that she had been very interested in the sections on slavery and segregation, and ‘now she understood why black people always seem to think that you owe them something’.

This is a woman born and raised in the US. I was utterly fascinated, on a number of levels.
