A case doesn’t have to ‘go to trial” for you to rack up a large legal bill. Lawyers charger per hour, whether they are in court, talking to you in an office, at a restaurant, or doing research for you without youy even being prestnt or aware that at that hour(s) they are ‘working” for you

My wife is a criminal defense attorney and spends far more time preparing a case than the time spent in court. A lot more time.
