Stray thought: Latin Americans, speaking very, very generally, tend to eschew wall-to-wall carpeting, and based on my entirely unscientific, anecdotal evidence, it’s because they think carpeting is inherently dirty (preferring hardwood floors which can be scrubbed). While I personally like carpeting, I think they may be on to something there.

No, they are definitely right. ESPECIALLY the cheap grades that “come with the house”.
