Of course, reform would ordinarily come by inches in a large organization like that with entrenched views. Like the US itself. Some reforms long pre date the rest.

The pope saying this doesn’t actually signal reform. If the Vatican stops opposing attempts to decriminalize homosexuality at the UN, that’d be meaningful reform. He could accomplish a very minor reform by issuing directives allowing gay men to be accepted as priests, which I’m hoping he’ll do, but that’ll still be a very minor step.

The new Pope is much better than the last one, but what’s sad is that his very moderate idea of reform shows how extremist the positions of the Catholic Church (not, note, Catholics) have become.
