Using Wikipedia (citation needed), completing a college degree for those aged 25-29 rose from about 5% in 1940 to a bit less than 30% by 2015.

Further down the article, they note in the last fifty years or so the number of people who have obtained a high school diploma has increased from 85% to 89%.

That makes sense to me. And that really is the triumph of the GI Bill right there. I’d be curious to see the amount of post secondary education in 1940 versus today. My one grandfather never went to college or an university but he did use his GI benefits for trade school which allowed him to pursue the career he wanted to do and that really is why my mom and uncle were able to get the life they got. My mom didn’t grow up affluent, far from it but she grew up decent enough that her and her brother could afford college and get degrees.
