It takes a lot of antagonism to make a tarantula scrape the hair off it’s back. They are usually totally ok with climbing up on you. Be nice and they are mellow.

My mom had a pet that she had caught herself on her birthday expedition to some park in Irvine that’s probably a housing development now. I admired it, but I don’t recall handling it.
