Well it’s my understanding it is about risk. The more risk you take, the more interest you get to charge. No risk, no (or very little) reward.

If it weren’t for people taking some risk, we probably wouldn’t be chatting in this manner right now. I hope you can see that.

This comment is somewhat extemporaneous to the context in which you were commenting, but…

A systemic (even cultural) problem we face in this country, in my opinion, is that individuals are increasingly permitted by law or by lax enforcement of law to take risks, the consequences of which, if they ‘go bad’, are suffered by the rest of society.
