For the most part. Sometimes they are honoured.

Of note, while Poland had its mutual defence treaty with the United Kingdom on the eve of WW2, though the UK could not stop the attack by Germany and the Soviet Union, that treaty is what caused the UK to declare war on Germany.

Our own entry into the Persian Gulf War on behalf of Kuwait was partially based on a treaty with that nation.
