If O’Connor had waited. She may have gotten her wish. Gore in 2004 would imo be a questionable reelection since it would have been a fourth consecutive term for the Dems in the WH.

But with Bush in there since 2000, she had the option to retire earlier. In fact, she was stupid enough to be caught on record expressing this exact point when moaning about an early call of the election for Gore.
