Okay - here’s an example of a probable, post-collapse, scenario.

Survivalist has a Krugerrand or a $20 Gold Eagle. Goes to Farmer Joe.

“Wanna buy some chicken,” says Survivalist.

“Sure, whaddaya got?”

“I got one ounce of gold,” says he.

Unless the farmer wants to buy material for a piece of jewelry, unlikely in the event of a true collapse, he doesn’t want an ounce of gold. If he does want gold, how is he supposed to make change?

Assuming the farmer takes the gold, the Survivalist just bought one very expensive chicken, at best.
