It’s a weird statement & I’ve heard it before. Every time I recoil, wondering where the hell does this sentiment come from?

On my dead Mother’s blah blah, on my father’s life blah blah.

Some sort of huge cultural importance put on words, hard for me to explain, because I’ve never understood.

I think it’s because it is something you hold in such high regard, to besmirch it by using it as weight for telling a lie would be bad. Or something.

Really, if someone is inclined to lie it doesn’t make them more truthful.
