My introduction to Hemingway was The Old Man And The Sea. IMHO his worst work. By a bad English teacher in HS, and I was an avid reader. The presentation and the quizzes were like slow lobotomy. “Now let’s make a cover for it, and you choose the illustration”.
I did a crying old man in a sinking rowboat pulling in the skeleton of a fish…Didn’t go over well. If that is Hemingway, let me out. Only years later did I discover the real Hemingway, the one with dirt under his fingernails and whiskey on his breath and a heart that cared and fought for his beliefs.
I also read Hesse and Sartre at a young age while I was expanding my mind…..
