It’s anti-intellectualism takes to it’s logical conclusion. The idea that people get turned off by politicians who appear smart and “talk down” to them, so good politicians try to appear as if they’re one of the common folk, which almost always just looks hilarious when you have a rich 1%er trying to act as if he’s at home at a country fair, eating corndogs and washing them down with soda before quickly begging for a bottle of mineral water to get the taste out of their mouths.

Being actors in other words. Which is part of the reason why Reagan was successful. Other politicians trying to “act” as something else in order to address some perceived weakness gets you things like Dukakis in a tank.
