No, it just seems that treaties are tools of convenience.

Quite often, yes, they are - I can’t disagree with that assertion.

But as always, the danger arises when leaders miscalculate the seriousness of a treaty. For instance, Trump could be thinking the Sino-North Korean Treaty could just be a scrap of paper; on the other hand, Kim Jong-un may well be thinking that China would fully honor their treaty obligations…..he acts the way he does because he thinks China’s got his back no matter what.

Trump - or Kim - could be guessing incorrectly with regard to the seriousness of treaties, with potentially lethal consequences for tens of millions. It wouldn’t be the first time in human history that’s happened……not by a damn sight.
