The reports I’m seeing show what looks like a ridiculous amount of damage for a 6.4 quake in a more or less first world industrialized nation. What’s up with that? I rode out the 6.8 Nisqually quake in Seattle in a brick building built in 1906. Only one person died in that quake, of a heart attack. Some buildings were condemned after the fact but none fell or were visibly damaged beyond some cracks and broken facades. I have to wonder what’s up with Taiwanese building codes, a Ring of Fire nation with their capabilities should have built much stronger structures.
