If they abandon democracy how can they call themselves conservatives? If they aren’t in favour of conserving democracy they are either authoritarians or barbarians.

I’ve never thought of conservatism as being tied to democratic values. It does depend on the context — but political/religious conservatism is associated with preserving “traditional” customs/values, however those are defined, and not particularly open to new experiences, looking to the past and not the future, retaining the old power structure and old families, not admitting others who look/act/believe differently into the ruling class.
